Sorry for yet another tyre post

I've been searching the forum for the last hour but can't find the answer.

My '98 2.8V6 ghia X Galaxy has Dunlop SP2020 215/55/R16 95H tyres

after a couple of front back swaps, it's come to a point where I need to replace all 4

So maybe time for a change in tyre manufacturer

However, I've been quoted different recommended speed ratings by different people.

The tyre centre at CostCo recommend 97W for the V6 Galaxy, (Michelin only) in fact they don't even stock the 'H' tyre in that size.

So what speed rating do I need ? (and what are the speed rating ranges ?) even the SP2020's come in different ratings !

one more question, i've been quoted a decent price for Avon tyres, (H rated at

Sorry to reply to own post

Just found the speed ratings

The fitter at CostCo obviously believes my gal can reach 168mph !!!

I'll stick with the 'H's (130mph)

Still would appreciate views on Avon tyres though

cheers

If your not doing any high performance racing then the only difference is the price.

90% of vehicles randomly tested have incorrectly inflated tyres.

Nearly all blowouts ( 80% + )are caused by incorrectly inflated tyres.

The rest are nearly all suspected damaged ( including beyond bald !).

Its a fair bet if your tyres go it has little to do with the tyre quality and more to do with poor driving and maintenance.

Its a con the same as "premium" fuel.

Others may differ from my opinion ( and probably will).

Just make sure the load rating is ok. Tyres should be extra load, etc for safety reasons.

The speed rating is not only speed but also the amount or torque the vehicle generates. My Gal has W rated tyres and it's a diesel.

If your car specifies W rated tyres in it's spec and you fit H rated, you could void your insurance. This subject has been raised before, try a search.

This isn't true - the speed rating is simply the maximum speed that the tyre can run at for a 10 minute period without failing. It has nothing to do with torque.

I believe the minimum speed rating you should fit to the Galaxy is H. Anything higher (V, W, etc.) is OK but would probably wear quicker due to the softer rubber compound used.

Any tyre that has a load rating of >97 is classed as extra load or reinforced.

Charlie Browns are doing 30% off when you buy 4 Continentals from them at the moment, or 15% off 2.

How about these :

'Westlake' will be another imported tyre from China, some of these are perfectly okay, but some are not so good. It pays to have a search around the net, see what other folks experiences with the tyres are like... if you can't find any info, then it's really up to you. If there is no feedback on a particular brand, bear in mind that some of these tyre manufacturers change the name on their tyres quite often... makes tracing bad reviews impossible.
